OFFICIALS

Chairman of Stewards – G. Goold
Stewards – B. Wright, J. Williamson, R. Hanson, K. Lemay-Robbins, T. Hendy (Cadet)

GENERAL

Stewards approved the following overweight:

Race 5: Jockey D. Thornton +1kg (55kg)

Stewards inspected the track and upgraded it to a Good 4 at 12:18pm.

As Jockey K. Wilson-Taylor was unable to make the allocated weight in Race 5, he was replaced on MR O’REILLLY by Jockey D. Thornton. Jockey K. Wilson-Taylor was fined $100 pursuant to AR 190(3) for accepting a ride when overweight.

Trainer G. Duncan was fined $100 pursuant to LR67(1) for the late declaration of Jockey A. Sewell as the rider of EKHIDNA in Race 7. In determining penalty, Stewards took into consideration Trainer G. Duncan’s excellent record in relation to this rule.

Apprentice E. Lang was fined $200 pursuant to AR 128(2) for leaving the course after Race 1 without permission.

RACE 1: RACECOURSE VILLAGE MAIDEN PLATE  2020 M

The start of this event was delayed approximately 3 mins owing to CONCADOR shifting its near-fore plate enroute to the barriers and requiring farrier attention. CONCADOR subsequently underwent a veterinary examination and was cleared to start.

Correct weight was delayed, allowing Apprentice C. Baker, the rider of third placegetter MISS CHAMONIX (NZ), and Apprentice Mentor S. Scriven to view the stewards patrol footage to determine whether there were grounds to lodge a protest against the second placegetter PROUD MISS. After viewing the replays, Apprentice C. Baker and Apprentice Mentor S. Scriven elected not to proceed with a protest, therefore correct weight was declared on the judge’s placings.

CONCADOR – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination after racing at Gatton 09/01/26 and was cleared to start. Apprentice E. Lang reported at scales that it was not her intention to lead, however after being caught wide in the early stages, she elected to allow her mount to stride forward and settle in a leading position approaching the winning post on the first occasion.

I'M THAT GUY (NZ) – Approaching the winning post on the first occasion, was momentarily steadied when placed in restricted room by CONCADOR. Apprentice E. Lang the rider of CONCADOR was reprimanded pursuant to AR 131(a) for careless riding. Raced wide for the majority of the event.

PARAT SIBIFORTUNAM – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Lost its near hind plate.

STILL UNWANTED – Laid out under pressure leaving the 200m.

CHARMED CHOICE (NZ) – Raced in restricted room approaching the winning post on the first occasion. When asked to comment on the performance of CHARMED CHOICE (NZ), Jockey K. Wilson- Taylor reported that the gelding failed to respond to his riding when placed under pressure in the home straight and proved disappointing.  A post- race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.

PROUD MISS – Raced in restricted room leaving the winning post on the first occasion.

MISS CHAMONIX (NZ) – Slow to begin. Leaving the 600m, raced in restricted room for a short distance to the inside of PROUD MISS which laid in and away from the weakening I'M THAT GUY (NZ). Leaving the 200m, was obliged to shift inwards in order to improve.

RACE 2: SOUTHS SPORTS CLUB MAIDEN PLATE  1615 M

KATDEEL – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Laid out rounding the home turn. Near the 200m, improved onto heels and shifted out and became awkward in its action for a short distance. When asked to comment on the tactics adopted, in particular KATDEEL settling at the rear of the field, Jockey A. Jones explained that from the wide barrier, connections advised that they were of the opinion that the gelding would be required to do too much work in the early stages to secure a forward position close to the rail, and therefore, the instructions were to try to obtain a midfield position with cover. Jockey A. Jones reported that after beginning awkwardly, she was unable to secure this position so elected to take up a position at the rear of the field. When questioned regarding her riding near the 700m, and whether there was an option to improve around BRINDAVAN, Jockey A. Jones advised that she was of the opinion that she would have to come wider of BASIL’S BOW and felt that it would have been detrimental to her mounts finishing efforts to cover extra ground at that point of the race, so she elected to trail BRINDAVAN to the home turn, where KATDEEL, when placed under pressure, did not quicken as she had anticipated and her opinion may not have appreciated todays track conditions and proved disappointing. Trainer representative for the Currie stable J Leech confirmed the instructions and was reprimanded pursuant to AR100(1)(a) for failing to notify the change of tactics. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying clinical signs of the thumps and a slow recovery.

BASIL'S BOW – Contacted the rail on several occasions leaving the mounting yard. Underwent a veterinary examination behind the barriers and was cleared to start. Raced wide throughout.

VERMILION KIRIN – Raced in restricted room approaching the 1200m. Near the 150m, steadied from the heels of BRINDAVAN (IRE) which shifted in under riding. Jockey R. Maloney, the rider of BRINDAVAN (IRE) was reprimanded pursuant to AR 131(a) for careless riding.

RACE 7: MAGIC MILLIONS CARNIVAL QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD BENCHMARK 68 HANDICAP         1200 M

BETTERLUCKNEXTTIME – Over-raced in the middle stages.

OVER DRAFT – Steadied from the heels of WOOTTEN HYDE near the 700m, which shifted in when insufficiently clear. Jockey J. Guthmann-Chester, the rider of WOOTTEN HYDE was severely reprimanded pursuant to AR 131(a) for careless riding. Raced wide for the majority of the event.

Sewell was advised of his right of appeal.

Guthmann-Chester reported that from the wide barrier he was obliged to make use of his mount in the early stages to obtain a forward position and in his opinion, this had a detrimental effect on its finishing efforts. He further added that the tempo of today’s race did not suit the gelding and that WOOTTEN HYDE would be better suited ridden with cover.

RACE 8: LADBROKES RACING EXTRAS IN MULTI CLASS 1 HANDICAP   1350 M

Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards considered an objection lodged by Jockey K. Wilson-Taylor the rider of the fifth placed SUMMIT against 1st placed CHIEF IN CHARGE (J. Guthmann-Chester) alleging interference over the final 150m. Stewards after hearing evidence from the relevant parties and viewing the stewards patrol footage, were of the opinion that leaving the 100m, CHIEF IN CHARGE commenced to shift in under riding,  into the running line of SUMMIT, which was obliged to check. Stewards, considering the official 2.05 length margin, the level of interference sustained, the proximity to the finish line and the manner both runners finished the race off over the concluding stages and could not be comfortably satisfied that had this incident not occurred that SUMMIT would have finished ahead CHIEF IN CHARGE at the conclusion of the event and therefore the objection was dismissed, and correct weight given on the judges semaphored numbers.

Guthmann- Chester, the rider of CHIEF IN CHARGE pleaded guilty to a charge pursuant to AR 131(a) for careless riding, the particulars being that at a point approaching the 100m, he permitted his mount to shift in under riding when insufficiently clear of SUMMIT, causing that runner to have be checked and lose its rightful running. Jockey J. Guthmann-Chesters’s license to ride in races was suspended for a period of 13 days commencing midnight 17th January and concluding midnight 31st January 2026. Jockey J. Guthmann-Chester was advised of his right of appeal.
