Race 1: L J Hooker Southport Fillies & Mares Class 1 H’Cap – 1400m
1st – Red Hot Element 2nd – Blessings 3rd – Walwa 4th – Clear Reflection
WALWA – Slow to begin. When asked to comment on the performance of the filly jockey D. Griffin stated that due to the small field and slow tempo in the early stages he elected to push forward to settle outside the leader, after which he was able to set a moderate tempo. Jockey Griffin added that bearing in mind the easy sectionals he was most disappointed with the filly’s failure to respond when placed under pressure rounding the home turn. Jockey Griffin was unable to offer any tangible explanation for the disappointing performance. A swab sample was taken from WALWA.
Stewards will interview trainer D. Bowen at a later date regarding his acceptance and subsequent scratchings of QUACKERLINA and DARBREE.

SECRET PUZZLE – Upon arriving at the barriers the filly underwent a veterinary examination after making contact with the outside running rail during the preliminary and was subsequently cleared to race.
BIG BAMBOO – Obliged to race wide early and allowed to stride forward to settle outside the leader passing the 900m. Upon return to scale jockey S. Galloway reported that he elected to shift wider upon straightening, where in his opinion the going was better.
KARAHARAGA – Bumped by LIGHT SHOWS approaching the 100m and became unbalanced.
DEEP DOWN – Upon return to scale App S. Eilbeck reported the filly raced greenly throughout.
JOLLY BOY – When questioned as to the performance jockey J. Stanley stated that the gelding quickened when asked to respond upon straightening however, he was disappointed in the gelding’s finishing effort after it weakened noticeably over the final 200m. Jockey Stanley was of the view that the gelding was stepping up in class today and as a result failed to carry the 59 kilo impost. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
LIGHT SHOWS – When questioned as to the tactics adopted over the final 500m jockey D. Griffin stated that leaving the 500m he elected to shift out so as to improve but was unable to do so due to DEEP DOWN being positioned to his outside. Jockey Griffin added that upon straightening he attempted to follow SECRET PUZZLE however, when that runner initially failed to quicken as expected he elected to shift out to secure a run between BIG BAMBOO and HANNAH’S WISH. Before he was able to obtain that run HANNAH’S WISH shifted in, which resulted in LIGHT SHOWS being held up for a short distance. Jockey Griffin was then obliged to again shift out to secure clear running to the outside of HANNAH’S WISH and in doing so bumped KARAHARAGA approaching the 100m. Jockey Griffin further added that when able to obtain clear running over the final 100m the filly finished the race off well.

Morris stated he was instructed to ride the filly out of the barrier in an attempt to obtain a forward position. Jockey Morris added that from the wide barrier he was obliged to ride the filly vigorously in the early stages so as to comply with his instructions. Jockey Morris was of the opinion that the pressure required to take up a forward position in the early stages had a detrimental affect on its overall performance. Jockey Morris noted that the filly had recently trialled well when settling in a forward position and would derive a fitness benefit from today’s run. Trainer B. Ahrens confirmed the instructions and stated that he had issued similar instructions at the filly’s previous starts however, on those occasions it had begun awkwardly and raced greenly at the rear of the field.
