Race 1: Gladstone Cup 6th August BM 50 Handicap- 850 metres
On conclusion of this race, Judges advised Stewards that no photo finish image was available to review the placings. Both judges agreed as to the placings of 1st- MOZZINATOR 2nd TELEPHOTO 3rd WORDS AND PICTURES. As per AR 154, placings shall be decided only by the Judge/s. Stewards reviewed available video footage of the finish and having consideration to AR 156 (1), Stewards could not be satisfied that any evidence existed to alter the judge’s placings and correct weight was declared.
Jockey I Coombes (TELEPHOTO) was informed of this issue and outcome prior to correct weight.
Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Jockey J Stephens (SOUL SERENADE- 4th) viewed the film with the intention of lodging an objection. However, while grounds existed and considering the margins, Jockey Stephens did not proceed.
MISS MALCHI- Slow to begin.
MINI MINX- Began awkwardly and was a little slow into stride. A post-race veterinary inspection revealed an injury to its suspensory ligament and treatment was administered. Trainer advised that the mare would be now retired. Nevertheless, in the event of a return to racing, a veterinary certificate would be required.
VICIOUS CHICK- Near 400 metres, placed in restricted room, eased from heels of another runner, hung out and lost some ground.
SOUL SERENADE- Tightened, checked and lost its rightful running near the 150 metres. Jockey A Lawrence was found guilty of a careless charge in that at this point he allowed his mount to shift out and cause SOUL SERENADE to be tightened and checked. Jockey Lawrence’s licence to ride in races was suspended from 27th March 2016 up to and including 4th April 2016 (9 days).
Race 2: Carlton Mid Class B Handicap- 1194 metres
FLY ONCE MORE- Began awkwardly and blundered on jumping.
RUN ‘EM RAGGED- Slow into stride.
EXCEL WITH REWARD- Began awkwardly.
OUTBACK WRANGLER- Near 400 metres, placed in restricted room between runners and was eased.
Jockey K Gates was fined a total $300 for use of her whip on one more occasions prior to the 100 metres in Race 1 and use of her whip on two more occasions in Race 2.
Race 3: Gladstone Harbour Festival Class 4 Handicap- 1194 metres
SPEEDREADER- Began a little awkwardly and was slow into stride.
Race 4: Crown Lager Maiden Plate- 1000 metres
ELDIYM- On leaving the enclosure, reared over and landed heavily and escaped riderless. On being captured, was declared a late scratching at 2.55pm by Stewards acting on veterinary advice. Jockey D. Hayse was uninjured in this incident and able to fulfil his remaining engagements.
TRIGGER LAD- When loaded, become fractious, reared over and broke through the barriers. Was declared a late scratching at 3.04pm. Trainer D Gardiner was advised that the gelding would be required to obtain a further barrier certificate.
Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards ordered that bets on these runners be refunded with the following deductions to be applied to winning bets;
Bets prior to 12.55pm- SHOCKWAVE- 15c Win 20c Place
SWEET ARETHA- 19 c Place
MISS DORA- 19c Place
Bets placed between 2.55pm and 3.04pm- SHOCKWAVE- 7c Win 10c Place
SWEET ARETHA- 9 c Place
MISS DORA- 9c Place
ONEMOREMELODY- Slow to begin.
THAT PRETTY GIRL- Began awkwardly and lost ground. In the straight, lay inwards.
SWEET ARETHA- Leaving the 200 metres, whip was knocked from rider’s grasp by another rider’s whip.
Race 5: Greg McCann Memorial Open Handicap- 1000 metres
No racing incidents
Race 6: The Melbourne Cup @ GTC 4th June BM 55 Handicap- 1517 metres
