Bell Race Club - 3/1/2026

Stewards held an inquiry at the Toowoomba Stewards Office on the 13th of January 2026 into an incident from Race 1 at Bell Race Club on Saturday the 3rd of January 2026. After considering the evidence and video footage available regarding the incident, Apprentice Jess Emmerson was reprimanded for careless riding pursuant to AR131(a) in that when leaving the 200m point she permitted her mount BASIL’S BOW to shift in when not fully clear of CALMER KARMA ridden by Jockey B Stower obliging it’s rider to correct her mount.
 
GENERAL

Stewards permitted the following overweight:
Race 2: 10 PIERTAGA – D. Smith +1kg (55kg)
 
As Jockey M. Savva was not riding due to injury and Jockey J. Morris due to acceptable reasons, Stewards permitted the rider change(s) as per the Stewards Race Day Summary. Jockey M. Savva was advised she would require a medical clearance prior to resuming riding.
 
Following a track inspection by Stewards, the mouth of the 1350m chute has been reassessed as a Soft 6 at 12:30pm. The track rating for the remainder of the track remains unchanged at this stage.
 
Trainer B. Gorman was reprimanded pursuant to LR 72(1)(b) for failing to declare riders for trials by the prescribed time.

RACE 1: TAB MAIDEN HANDICAP       1100 M
 
CONQUER DAT – After racing three-wide throughout, commenced to weaken over the final 400m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
 
MIDNIGHT MAGGIE (NZ) – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Raced keenly in the early stages. Shifted in at the finishing line, contacted the rail and became unbalanced. After the running of this race it was noted the filly had lost its right fore plate.
 
UP THE CREEK (NZ) – Began awkwardly.
 
SHAQUE D'AMOUR – Turned its head as the start was effected and was subsequently slow to begin. Raced wide for the majority. Inclined to lay out obliging its rider to stop and correct his mount on several occasions in the home straight.
 
RACE 2: GREAT NORTHERN CLASS 1 HANDICAP         1975 M
 
CASTERLY ROCK – When asked to comment on the gelding’s performance, Jockey D. Thornton stated the gelding was disappointing when placed under pressure.
 
CIGAR MAN – Raced greenly when placed under pressure in the early part of the home straight. Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination to assess aged abrasions and was subsequently cleared to start.   
 
CHAYSE 'N' PENNY – Began awkwardly and bumped with AIMA SUN. Raced greenly when placed under pressure in the early part of the home straight.
 
DOWN UNDER STUNNAH – Slow to begin. Held up for clear running rounding the home turn when awkwardly placed at the heels of the weakening CHAYSE 'N' PENNY.
 
AIMA SUN – Bumped at the start. Laid out rounding the home turn when placed under pressure.
 
PIERTAGA – Trainer R. Tyrell reported that following today’s disappointing performance, it is his intention to send the filly for a spell.  
 
COSMIC INSANITY – Restrained from the wide barrier to a position nearer the rail.
 
RACE 3: RACING AND SPORTS BENCHMARK 70 HANDICAP         800 M
 
FLAMING CONQUEST – Bumped at the start with INQUISITIVE LEGEND and blundered. Laid out approaching and rounding the home turn.
 
CAMPAI – Raced wide for the majority.
 
MIXED SIGNALS – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination due to resuming racing from an extended period and was subsequently cleared to start. Underwent a resaddle upon arrival to the barriers. Apprentice O. Webb dropped her whip near the 200m.
 
ADMITTED – Inclined to lay out between the 600m and 300m. Jockey A. Jones reported the gelding may not have appreciated today’s track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
 
INQUISITIVE LEGEND – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination due to resuming racing from an extended period and was subsequently cleared to start. Began awkwardly and bumped with FLAMING CONQUEST.
 
LEVAR – After being caught wide in the early stages, Jockey M. Hellyer elected to restrain to obtain a position with cover.
 
After the running of this race, the track was upgraded to a Good 4 at 3:35pm.
 
RACE 4: SEVEN NEWS CLASS 3 HANDICAP         1680 M
 
BITOFTHEBLARNEY (NZ) – Connections advised a change of tactics; attempt to settle in a forward position. Ridden accordingly.
 
ZHENG YOU – Raced keenly in the middle stages.
 
BURLEIGH MAGIC – Held up approaching the home turn, shifting wider in the early part of the home straight to secure clear running. After the running of this race it was noted the gelding had lost both hind plates.
 
GOT YOURSELF A GUN – Slow to begin. Over raced for the majority. Near the 150m, obliged to steady when ZHENG YOU (T. Brooker) shifted in. Jockey T. Brooker rider of ZHENG YOU was reprimanded pursuant to AR 131(a) for careless riding in this incident.  Approaching the finishing line, was awkwardly placed on the heels of ZHENG YOU (T. Brooker) which shifted in. Jockey T. Brooker rider of ZHENG YOU was reprimanded pursuant to AR 131(a) for careless riding in this incident.
 
SHACKAMAXON – Raced wide for the majority. After the running of this race, it was noted the mare had lost its right fore plate.
 
RACE 5: BARRIER REEF POOLS RATINGS BAND 0 - 62 HANDICAP  1100 M
 
GOT GUMPTION – Began awkwardly.
 
BALTRAY – Carried wider rounding the home turn when SHAPIN POWER laid out.
 
HORRIBLE HANK – Tightened for room at the start between runners. Improved onto heels approaching the 100m and was unable to be fully tested for the remainder of the event.
 
LANTAU ISLAND – Hampered at the start. Over raced in the early stages. Held up for clear running rounding the home turn until approaching the 200m.
 
I'M LUCKY TWO – Near the 300m, was bumped by ANDI DON'T CARE when that runner shifted out and became unbalanced. When asked to comment on the performance, Jockey D. Thornton stated in his opinion the gelding would appreciate being ridden with cover. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
 
ANDI DON'T CARE – Began awkwardly and bumped RUBAAHY. Near the 300m, shifted out and bumped I'M LUCKY TWO.
 
SHAPIN POWER – Raced wide for the majority. Laid out rounding the home turn.
 
RUBAAHY – Bumped at the start by ANDI DON'T CARE.
 
HEY CHARDONNAY – Shifted in on jumping. In the early stages after being caught wide, was obliged to restrain to obtain a position with cover.  
 
RACE 6: GORDON'S GIN BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP         1350 M
 
BLAKEMORE AVENUE was declared a late scratching at 5:19pm by order of Stewards acting on veterinary advice after becoming fractious in the barriers, rearing on two occasions and getting its leg stuck over the barrier partition. Trainer J. Healy was advised BLAKEMORE AVENUE would be required to obtain a further barrier certificate in a jumpout or official trial.
 
On the declaration of correct weight, Stewards ordered all bets on BLAKEMORE AVENUE to be refunded in full with the following deductions to apply:
1st – LAND BANK – 4c win, 2c place.
2nd – JUNGLE FEVER – 10c place.
3rd – SIX OF WANDS – 8c place.

SIX OF WANDS – Shortly after the start, bumped with BOLE LE before restraining to obtain a position with cover and over raced for a short distance. Held up for clear running in the early part of the home straight before improving onto heels approaching the 150m and shifted wider. When asked to comment on the tactics adopted, Trainer M. Hoysted stated it was the intention to have the gelding in a forward position, however SIX OF WANDS can have a tendency to begin moderately and if so, the gelding was to be ridden with cover. When asked to comment on the tactics adopted in particular in the early stages of the race, Apprentice F. Sandkuhl confirmed the gelding has begun moderately in the past and further added with the delay of the start caused by another runner this may have contributed to SIX OF WANDS not beginning as well as expected.
 
JUNGLE FEVER – Bumped with ROCKRATA at the start.
 
LAND BANK – Near the 600m when racing keenly, improved onto the heels of REEBAR, contacting that runners heels and blundered. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
 
BOLE LE – Near the 900m, raced keenly when restraining for cover. Near the 600m, carried wider by LAND BANK when that runner shifted out after blundering.
 
SAMMAAN CITY – Connections advised a change of tactics; to be ridden with cover from the wide draw. Blundered on jumping and lost ground. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
 
ROCKRATA – Bumped with JUNGLE FEVER at the start.
