As J. Lloyd was riding at the Gold Coast race meeting, Stewards permitted him to be replaced by L. Tilley on HELL FOLLOWS (Race 7).

As apprentice M. Apel was not riding at today’s meeting due to being injured, she was replaced as per the Stewards summary. M. Apel was advised a medical clearance would be required prior to her riding again.

RACE 1: SEARLES GARDEN PRODUCTS QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN PLATE 800M

The start of this event was delayed approximately 4 minutes due to HIDDEN SPHERE displacing the off-hind plate behind the barriers and having to be reshod.

DON'T TELL LUCY – Began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped SORT OF IN LOVE which became unbalanced. Approaching the 700m was restrained when tightened for room when SORT OF IN LOVE shifted in. M. Murphy, the rider of SORT OF IN LOVE was severely reprimanded pursuant to AR131(a) for careless riding in this incident, Stewards took into consideration the racing manners of DON’T TELL LUCY, which raced keenly with its head up during this incident. Over raced in the early and middle stages. Approaching the home turn commenced to hang out and continued to shift out extremely wide around the home turn and proved difficult to ride, resulting in the rider easing the gelding down to the line. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Trainer J. Bellamy was advised DON’T TELL LUCY would be required to officially trial to the satisfaction of Stewards prior to accepting for a future race.

KID MCKINLAY - Slow to begin. Laid out approaching and rounding the home turn.

Trainer M. Lakey was reprimanded for negligence pursuant to AR227(a). Over raced in the early stages and approaching the 900m shifted in abruptly. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

LADY KATE – Began very awkwardly and lost ground. Stewards questioned apprentice S. Bailey in the presence of Racing Queensland apprentice mentor R. Fradd with regards to the tactics adopted, in particular her riding approaching the home turn and during the home straight. S. Bailey stated that she was instructed to ride the filly where comfortable, however after beginning awkwardly, was forced to settle back in the field. She added that her mount raced greenly during the event and that in accordance with her instructions, she rode for luck approaching and rounding the home turn. She further added that she was held up for clear running upon entering the home straight behind MUD ‘N’ BLOOD which shifted ground and when shifting to the inside near the 100m, rode hands and heels out to the finish. Stewards in considering the evidence, advised apprentice S. Bailey that her vigor had come under notice in the home straight, and that her riding lacked the appropriate purpose. Stewards in determining the matter were mindful that S. Bailey had been initially awkwardly placed at the heels of MUD ‘N’ BLOOD in the early part of the home straight, however also noting apprentice S. Bailey’s relative inexperience, took the matter no further.

RACE 7: GREAT NORTHERN BREWERY BENCHMARK 55 HANDICAP 1900M

CAPTAIN EAGLE – Began awkwardly. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted, specifically his riding from the 600m, apprentice B. Wheeler stated that his instructions were to let the horse flow, not to place pressure on the gelding’s mouth, that the horse had been successful at the track when ridden this way, and with the big weight being carried, was mindful of not stop starting his mount’s run. He added that the gelding has had breathing issues throughout its career and has flipped its soft palate and stopped in races before. B. Wheeler further added that when CAPTAIN EAGLE improved to the outside of O’CALDINO, he made his run from near the 600m and whilst he still had a hold on his mount, upon review of the race, conceded that he had made an error in judgement in not waiting a little longer before making his run when he did. Co-trainer W. Hulbert stated that he thought the horse would lead when doing the form, he confirmed the instructions issued to apprentice B. Wheeler, that the horse is difficult to ride, and that he needs to be in a nice rhythm. He added that when the pace eased in the middle stages, B. Wheeler kept the horse rolling, and that he felt todays soft track had a significant effect on the performance, as it has not finished of it races on similar rain effected tracks, adding that the today’s track had cut out significantly which his horse does not appreciate. W. Hulbert further added that he was not displeased with the ride, adding that the gelding cannot be restrained or held up, confirming that CAPTAIN EAGLE can choke down or flip its soft palate and can stop in its races. Stewards after considering the evidence, agreed with apprentice B. Wheeler, that he had made an error in judgement in making his run on the horse when he did, they were mindful of the instructions issued and the racing mannerisms of CAPTAIN EAGLE. In determining the matter, Stewards were of the opinion that B. Wheeler’s error in judgement was not culpable under the rules of racing and took no further action. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery.

SLY CORNER (NZ) – Near the 600m was steadied when OAKFIELD EAGLE shifted out. W. O’Connell the rider of OAKFIELD EAGLE was severely reprimanded for careless riding pursuant to AR131(a) in this incident. Rider M.
