GENERAL:

Stewards today conducted stable inspections of a number of trainers located at Bernborough Avenue with runners engaged at today's meeting.

Race 1: Pacific National QTIS 2-Y-O Maiden Handicap - 1050 metres
1st CYCLONE ALEYSA 2nd LOVE RED 3rd WATCH ME DAZZLE EM 4th - RAINBOW JILL

GIDGEE COALS - Slow to begin.

CRAIGLEA AMITY - Bumped at the start. Raced keenly in the early stages. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

LOVE RED - Bumped at the start. In the early part of the home straight was momentarily inconvenienced.

RAINBOW JILL - Caught wide in the early and middle stages.

WATCH ME DAZZLE EM - Shifted out under pressure in the home straight.

Passing the 700 metres App. N. Summers allowed GIDGEE COALS to shift in when not quite clear of CRAIGLEA BARINA (J. P. Stanley), which had to be steadied. App. Summers was reprimanded.

Race 2: HOT FM Maiden Handicap - 1100 metres
1st ELIZA BELLE 2nd FOREST MAGIC 3rd GYPSY SECRET 4th - HIDENA MAN

FOREST MAGIC - When Jockey A. Butler was indisposed due to personal reasons, stewards permitted App. J. Orman to be substituted as rider of the gelding.

NINJA MYRTLE - The start was delayed when the mare refused to load into the barriers. Stewards ordered the scratching of the mare at 1.39 p.m. Subsequently they ordered that all bets made on NINJA MYRTLE be refunded in full and that the following deductions apply:

6¢ in the dollar for the place for the winner, ELIZA BELLE
3¢ in the dollar for the place for 2nd, FOREST MAGIC
4¢ in the dollar for the place for 3rd, GYPSY SECRET

Trainer J. Amory was told that she must provide a barrier certificate before NINJA MYRTLE will be permitted to race again.

GYPSY SECRET - Was fractious in the barriers, examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon and cleared to take its place in the field. When questioned regarding his riding in the home straight, App. M. Haley explained that shortly after straightening he was held up behind runners and unable to shift to the outside as he had progressed too far into the run and was continually disappointed when attempting a narrow run. He said that passing the 200 metres he angled his mount towards the outside, however was again disappointed over the concluding stages when another runner had improved to his outside. The explanation was noted.

MOONSHINE MAGGIE - Held up and unable to obtain clear running in the early part of the straight, then raced in restricted room over the concluding stages.

WILD GYPSY ROSE - Began awkwardly.

ELIZA BELLE - Slow to begin, then raced ungenerously in the early stages.

HIDENA MAN - Caught wide in the early and middle stages.

FOREST MAGIC - Raced wide throughout. Passing the 200 metres was bumped on the hindquarters.

Race 3: All Tree Services Class 1 Handicap - 1800 metres
1st - MARTHA'S MOMENT 2nd GAINSFORD 3rd CORONATION JOURNEY 4th - FRANLYLE

EIGHT FIGURES - The start was delayed when the gelding refused to load into the barriers. EIGHT FIGURES was scratched by order of the stewards at 2.16 p.m. Subsequently they ordered that all bets made on the gelding be refunded in full and that the following deductions apply:

8¢ in the dollar for the place for the winner, MARTHA'S MOMENT
3¢ in the dollar for the place for 2nd, GAINSFORD
7¢ in the dollar for the place for 3rd, CORONATION JOURNEY

Trainer E. Covell was advised that he must provide a barrier certificate prior to EIGHT FIGURES being permitted to race again.

JORDANS JET - Was fractious in the barriers, began awkwardly, raced ungenerously in the early stages and was inclined to lay out.

CORONATION JOURNEY - Pulled hard in the lead and refused to settle.

GAINSFORD - Raced keenly in the early stages.

MARTHA'S MOMENT - Passing the 1400 metres improved into a narrow run and had to be steadied.

GENERAL BEERS - Passing the 300 metres Jockey D. Simmons lost the use of his nearside iron, was placed at a significant disadvantage and lost ground.

For a considerable distance in the back straight JORDANS JET (J. Orman) and GAINSFORD (P. Cullen) made heavy contact on numerous occasions. Apprentice Orman was cautioned against the practice of placing undue pressure on runners to his inside.

When questioned trainer O. Cairns could offer no explanation for the seeming improved performance of the winner, MARTHA'S MOMENT (C. Lennon), other than that the mare had dropped considerably in class. Jockey C. Lennon was fined $300 under A.R.137A(4)(b) for excessive use of his whip above shoulder level. In assessing penalty stewards took into account Jockey Lennon's exemplary record in regard to the Rule, however were mindful of the serious nature of this breach.

Race 4: Synergy Professional Accounting Service Class 2 Handicap - 1300 metres
1st ASSERTIVE LOVE 2nd OOSTHUIZEN 3rd JEWELLERY THIEF 4th - SOMEPLACE

HELOW TUCKER - Began awkwardly then raced ungenerously in the early stages.

SUNNY CHIEF - Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

OOSTHUIZEN - Laid in under pressure in the early part of the home straight.

REAL FRENCH SAGA - Began awkwardly, then shortly after the start was crowded for room.

Race 5: Maverick Welding Class 6 Plate - 1560 metres
1st FIESTY BELLE 2nd WHAT'S YOUR SECRET 3rd BOBCAT 4th - MOSSIMO

Stewards opened an inquiry into the training arrangements and ownership bona fides of BARACHELLO. After taking evidence from both the trainer and registered owners of the gelding stewards were not comfortably satisfied with either the training arrangements or bona fides of BARACHELLO and ordered the scratching of the horse at 2.00 p.m. The inquiry was adjourned to a time and date to be fixed.

MANZANITA - Slow to begin.

FIESTY BELLE - Began awkwardly.

VO TREASURE - Bumped at the start. Following the race trainer M. Dale reported that the mare had sustained a minor laceration to its off fore fetlock.

MOSSIMO - Shifted in at the start and made contact with another runner. Raced keenly in the early stages.

Race 6: Bennett Partners Class 1 Handicap - 1050 metres
1st MISS CHARISMA 2nd SNITZEL ROSE 3rd ELSPETH'S STAR 4th - RICH 'N' FAMOUS

CATEGORY TWO - The start was delayed when the filly proved difficult to load. Trainer L. Wright was told that a warning will be placed on the filly's barrier manners.

MISHANI SPERANZA - Slow to begin.

MISS CHARISMA - Crowded for room at the start.

CATEGORY TWO - Shifted in abruptly at the start and made contact with another runner, then knuckled.

SNITZEL ROSE - Bumped shortly after the start. Passing the 200 metres was bumped by another runner and carried wider.

MISS MYSTIFIED - Bumped shortly after the start. A post race veterinary examination of the mare revealed it to be lame in the off hind. Trainer was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to resuming racing.

GUTZ CI - Bumped shortly after the start. Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

RICH 'N' FAMOUS - Passing the 200 metres shifted out under pressure and made contact with another runner.

Race 7: Xmas Eve Raceday Booking Available Class 4 Handicap - 1050 metres
1st - ABOVE US 2nd - LOKUM 3rd - KILLER WASP 4th - FROM THE DARKNESS

LOVER OF LIFE - Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by Jockey P. Cullen for being overweight. Jockey D. Hayse was substituted. Slow to begin. Passing the 800 metres had to be steadied when racing tight to the inside of another runner.

LA RIVE DROITE - Began awkwardly.

KILLER WASP - Bumped by another runner shortly after the start.

LOKUM - Raced keenly in the early stages.

VERMITHRAX - Raced wide throughout.

Passing the 700 metres, when racing ungenerously, WILDEBEAST (N. Day) shifted in abruptly and hampered SWEET AND SAVAGE (S.Sheargold)

FROM THE DARKNESS - On returning to scale Jockey T. Bannon explained that after being slow to begin she elected to restrain her mount in an attempt to take up a position closer to the running rail, in contrast to its established racing pattern.

ABOVE US - When questioned regarding the gelding leading, Jockey A. Spinks explained that he had been instructed to race in a midfield position, however after beginning fairly, and when runners to his inside did not show the expected speed, rather than be caught wide he elected to ride forward and assume the lead, where the gelding travelled comfortably throughout. Trainer R. Vale, representing Trainer M. Lehmann, confirmed the instructions issued and added that the gelding has led in previous starts.
