GENERAL
Stewards questioned Mackay Turf Club officials in relation to the track rating being given out as a GOOD (4), when after a stewards' inspection the track was upgraded to a FIRM (2) at 11.00 a.m. After hearing the explanations tendered, stewards advised the Race Club officials that a report would be provided to Racing Queensland for its consideration and possible further action.
Race 1: Universal Sports Tours Open Handicap - 1200 metres
1st ACCIDENTAL 2nd WINGED WARRIOR 3rd AERIAL PING PONG 4th - MIATA
VO HEART - Late scratching, at 12 noon, due the upgrading of the track.
AERIAL PING PONG - Raced keenly in the lead through the middle stages.
ACCIDENTAL - Lost its off fore plate in running.
HATZIS - Trainer Mr L. Wright said that in his opinion the gelding failed to stretch out on the firm track.
Race 2: XMAS Eve Racing at Mackay Maiden Plate - 1200 metres
1st MOLONGLE HERO 2nd FOREST MAGIC 3rd LOGAN'S RUN 4th - WHO'S RIGHT
BOLT ON BY - Began awkwardly with its head up, then raced 3 wide without cover throughout.
BURJ AL - When being restrained in the early stages in an attempt to find cover, raced ungenerously and refused to settle. From the 600 metres laid out, when placed under pressure raced greenly and proved difficult to ride.
ADVERTISER - A post-race veterinary examination revealed that the gelding, which had to be restrained out of the race by its rider, had bled from both nostrils during running. Stable representative Mrs T. Simmons was advised that, as this was the first time the gelding had bled, it will be barred from racing for 3 months under A.R. 53A, and then only after a satisfactory gallop of at least 1000 metres in the presence of a steward.
Race 3: Tox Free QTIS 3-Y-O Handicap - 1100 metres
1st - CRAIGLEA WANDOO 2nd ISLAND TANG 3rd STRONG WILL 4th - GYPSY SECRET
BETTY ISABEL - Due to a miscommunication stewards permitted Jockey J. Felix to replace Jockey A. Spinks.
WICKED CRIME - Was kicked by the Clerk of the Course's horse behind the barriers. Acting on veterinary advice stewards ordered the late scratching of WICKED CRIME at 2.20 p.m. Subsequently they ordered that all bets made on WICKED CRIME be refunded and that the following deductions apply:
21¢ in the dollar for the win for the winner, CRAIGLEA WANDOO
8¢ in the dollar for the place for the winner, CRAIGLEA WANDOO
25¢ in the dollar for the place for 2nd, ISLAND TANG
29¢ in the dollar for the place for 3rd, STRONG WILL.
BETTY ISABEL - Slow to begin.
SHEER PERSISTENCE - Slow to begin.
CRAIGLEA JABIRU - Crowded for room shortly after the start. Raced 3 wide without cover throughout. Bumped shortly after straightening for home.
CRAIGLEA WANDOO - Shortly after straightening shifted out in search of clear running and made contact with another runner.
Race 4: Green Energy Technologies BenchMark 65 Handicap - 1100 metres
1st SHEPIKTUS 2nd KILLER WASP 3rd BON TEMPS 4th - IVANHOE
IVANHOE - Buffeted between runners shortly after the start.
METEOROS - Crowded for room shortly after the start.
SEQUONIS - Raced wide without cover throughout.
REVACIOUS - Raced wide throughout.
Race 5: NQAS Powersheds Class 1 Handicap - 1200 metres
1st VAINACIOUS 2nd AUTHENTIC SWING 3rd MORE GEORGE 4th - THE CATHOLIC GIRL
ROCKIN' READY - Slow to begin and then was crowded for room shortly after the start. For some distance in the early part of the home straight raced in restricted room.
THE CATHOLIC GIRL - Bounded in the air on jumping and lost ground. When questioned regarding his riding rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight, and as to whether there was an opportunity to improve to the inside of the eventual winner, Jockey A. Coome explained that after being held up rounding the home turn he rode his mount along and shifted wider in an attempt to obtain clear running. Jockey Coome said that had the eventual winner not rolled out, he would have been held up for clear running even further.
MISHANI INVADA - Passing the 900 metres brushed the running rail.
MUSCAT - Raced wide throughout.
MORE GEORGE - Near the 900 metres improved onto heels and had to be steadied. Jockey J. Felix was reprimanded under A.R. 137A for using his whip on 8 occasions prior to the 100 metres, 3 more than is permitted under the rule.
App. K. Aho was fined $100 under A.R. 137A for using her whip on MUSCAT on 10 occasions prior to the 100 metres, 5 more occasions more than is permitted under the Rules. In assessing penalty stewards took into account App. Aho's exemplary record in regard to the rule.
Race 6: NQBE Class 3 Handicap - 1300 metres
1st SPURRED UP 2nd COVENTRY 3rd PRINCE DAN 4th - REASONABEEL
BANCHORY LASS - Slow to begin.
AMERICAN HUSSLER - Slow to begin. On returning to scale App. Haley reported that his mount never travelled comfortably throughout. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have shifted its off hind plate.
MOLONGLE DREAM - Shortly after the start became awkward in its action, knuckled badly, then tailed the field throughout. A post-race veterinary examination revealed it to be sore in the near hind leg. Trainer's representative Mr G. Dooley said that the mare will now be spelled, however he was advised that he must provide a veterinary clearance and the mare must perform satisfactorily in a trial.
RISE TO THE TOP - In the early stages pulled hard, improved onto heels and had to be steadied.
LAMERICAN - Raced keenly in the middle stages.
SPURRED UP - Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.
