Mr Gill added BALINESE BOY was a horse that in the past has taken 2 to 3 runs to find its peak form and also has shown that it appreciates softer track conditions. Mr Gill stated that stepping the horse up to its ideal distance of 1400m added to the reasons why he thought the horse would give a forward showing today.

ZIGGY’S SPIRIT – When questioned regarding the disappointing performance rider D. Browne explained that the horse travelled wide throughout however, he was of the view that with the weight the horse was required to carry and today’s soft track conditions were telling factors in its disappointing performance. Jockey Browne added that the horse raced flat and in his opinion may have come to the end of its preparation. Trainer G. Duncan indicated that he would recommend to connections that the mare now go for a spell.
Following the running of this event the track was upgraded to a Soft 6.

OLYMPIC QUEEN – Bumped by VODNIK on jumping.

SMOKIN’ ELLE – Lost a near fore plate in running.
MORE BEAUTIFUL – Stewards questioned App T. Brooker in the presence of jockey’s advocate Rachel Mason and trainer C. Williamson regarding her tactics throughout . App Brooker advised her instructions were to be positive on the horse and try to ride in a forward position with cover if possible. App Brooker stated that MORE BEAUTIFUL began awkwardly and as a result she was at the tail of the field shortly after the start. App Brooker further stated that approaching the 1200m MORE BEAUTIFUL commenced to race keenly and she had difficulty restraining the mare and with the instructions in mind she allowed MORE BEAUTIFUL to shift to the outside of the field to allow it to stride forward in an endeavour to fulfil her instructions by obtaining a forward position with cover. App Brooker added that when she allowed the mare to stride forward down the back straight she was unable to obtain a position and consequently got left racing midfield extremely wide on the track. App Brooker said she continued to allow MORE BEAUTIFUL to improve its position mid race and on the turn. She said although the mare hit the lead momentarily in the straight, it began to weaken. Trainer C. Williamson confirmed the instructions given and stated the mare has been reluctant to begin well in its previous starts and hoped that the good draw today it might begin well. After reviewing the film Mr Williamson conceded that her endeavours to follow the instructions after missing the start, were acceptable bearing in mind the manner in which the mare was racing however, he expressed disappointment with how wide the horse travelled from the 600m and would rather her shift the mare in closer to the other runners. App Brooker was advised that her riding of MORE BEAUTIFUL lacked judgement and showed a distinct lack of initiative she was told that bearing in mind the position she was racing in early it would have been a far better option to have remained racing with the cover she had behind the eventual winner rather than shifting out and racing as wide as MORE BEAUTIFUL did. App Brooker was advised that the ride would also be referred to the relevant RQ officials in the training department for their perusal and any further tuition that they believe is necessary.
