Race 1: FISH ON FLINDERS CLASS 4 H'CAP – 1400M

Apprentice B. Grylls was fined $100 for failing to fulfil her engagement on UTMOST FAITH. Apprentice S. Payne was substituted as the rider of that runner.

LITTLE BIT DITSY – Slow to begin. Apprentice L. Dittman reported that the horse did not travel comfortably at any stage of the race and was in his view quite disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings and a swab sample was taken.

UTMOST FAITH – Stewards questioned apprentice S. Payne regarding the tactics adopted on UTMOST FAITH. Of particular concern was his apparent failure to take up a trailing position behind NO PROBLEM when the opportunity existed passing the 1200m. Of further concern to stewards was the reason for him allowing his mount to stride forward in a three-wide position leaving the 800m in an attempt to clear HONEY TOAST and race outside the leader. Apprentice Payne stated that during the early stages he attempted to obtain a position midfield with cover in advance of NO PROBLEM. He added that after passing the 1200m the tempo of the race slowed and for this reason he allowed his mount to stride forward. S. Payne conceded that he had erred by significantly pressuring UTMOST FAITH when it was apparent that he did not have sufficient speed to cross HONEY TOAST. Stewards advised S. Payne that his ride lacked judgement, however was not so unreasonable as to warrant further action being taken.

Race 2: SANDGATE BRIGHTON PARISH RACING MAIDEN H'CAP – 1600M

As A. Spinks was indisposed due to injury, B. Appo was substituted as the rider of TEEKAYO.

TE RANGI – Jumped away awkwardly, making heavy contact with another runner, and then raced ungenerously throughout the event.

AMAWIN – Had to be checked when tightened for room at the start.

SNAPPER ROCKS – Tightened for room on jumping away.

FIFTEEN LOVE –Tightened for room on jumping away. Shifted wider near the 800m to improve and raced wide from that point onwards. Inconvenienced by another runner near the 100m.

REGAL OPTION – Slow to begin.

TEEKAYO – Raced wide without cover.

Race 3: BIG DOG RAW FOOD FOR DOGS DIET MAIDEN H'CAP – 1200M

WINNING SPIRIT – Slow to begin and then had to be steadied shortly afterwards.

WISCONSIN – Obliged to race in restricted room between the 600m and the 450m and was unable to improve.

MAJOR SCOOP – Steadied when inconvenienced by another runner leaving the 1100m and was then further steadied approaching the 1000m to take up a trailing position at the tail of the field to obtain a position closer to the fence. M. Wood, the rider of FIRST PAIGE, was issued with a reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift in when not clear of runners to his inside.

O’FILLIATE – Blundered badly as the start was effected and lost ground.

FLINDERS PEAK – Raced three wide without cover.

MRS BOOLE – Overraced at the heels of another runner when the pace slackened approaching the 800m and the raced greenly for the remainder of the event.

SWISS MADEMOISELLE – Raced three wide.

Race 4: BAYSIDE YOGA QTIS 2YO H’CAP – 1000M

LINE BREAKER – Steadied when tightened for room leaving the 900m.

ALL TROOPS – Slow to begin. When asked to comment on the horse’s performance, M. Cahill indicated that the horse stood flat-footed as the start was effected and lost significant ground. He added that the horse increased tempo well in the early stages and he was of the view that if the horse had begun well, he would have been able to take up a forward position. He added that he recommended to connections to step the horse up over 1200m as the horse was doing its best work over the concluding stages and he was very satisfied with the performance.

ANGEL HAZE – Steadied when tightened for room leaving the 900m.

BETTER OFFER – Bumped by another runner at the start. Raced greenly in the early stages and leaving the 900m shifted in, inconveniencing other runners. Whilst it was accepted that BETTER OFFER was racing greenly, apprentice S. Payne was nonetheless advised that in similar circumstances he should have reacted earlier in an attempt to straighten and therefore he was advised to exercise more care. Apprentice S. Payne reported that his mount raced very greenly throughout and raced keenly in the early stages and he was of the view that the horse would take benefit with the removal of the blinkers in an attempt to have the horse settle in its race. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

ENCOURAGEMENT – Slow to begin. M. Palmer reported that his mount did not stretch out comfortably at any stage of the race. A post-race veterinary examination found the horse to be lame in both forelegs consistent with being shin sore. Trainer P. Duff was advised that the horse will require a veterinary clearance prior to being permitted to race again, or a six-week spell.

KERMANDIE STAR – Steadied from heels approaching the 800m and shifted in.

LORD JUSTICE – Raced wide without cover.

ON A ZEPHYR – Inconvenienced by another runner approaching the 800m.

OUR RACKETEER – Jumped away awkwardly and made contact with another runner. Had to be restrained passing the 500m and was unable to improve until leaving the 400m and then laid in for some distance approaching the 300m and was again inconvenienced by another runner and obliged to alter course leaving the 300m. Apprentice M. McGuren, the rider of KERMANDIE STAR, was reprimanded for this incident. When asked to explain the performance of the horse, J. Byrne stated from the wide barrier he had settled further back in the field than anticipated and the horse raced greenly throughout the event and will take benefit from today’s race.

WONDERFUL TALE – Had to be steadied to avoid heels leaving the 700m.

STAR STRIDER – Raced wide without cover.

MEANJIN – Raced greenly throughout whilst racing wide without cover.

Race 6: JIM MCKEERING REAL ESTATE CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1400M

LA FEMME FATALE – Tightened for room at the start and had to be steadied. Obliged to alter course back to the inside to secure clear running after being held up leaving the 400m.

SMALL CHANGE – Required resaddling behind the barriers. M. Hellyer reported that his mount hung in badly throughout the event.

GREY MATTER – Tightened for room at the start and had to be steadied.

Race 7: MCKEERING DOWN LAWYERS BM75 H’CAP – 1600M

REVITALISE – Connections advised that it would be the intention to have the horse ridden in a forward position if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly. Stewards questioned A. Butler regarding his riding tactics he adopted on REVITALISE, which was ridden aggressively from an inside barrier and set a strong tempo in the lead. A. Butler explained that he was instructed to take up a forward position today and after being momentarily challenged for the lead passing the 1400m he then attempted to steady REVITALISE. Stewards advised Mr Butler that he would be expected to make a greater effort to restrain his mount in the middle stages to allow it the opportunity to be more competitive. Stewards could not be satisfied that his riding had a material effect on the horse’s finishing position and took no direct action.

MODERN AL – Raced three wide without cover and four wide from the 600m.

EYE WINSOME – Held up rounding the home turn.

KEEPIN’ GRACE – Raced wide throughout.

Race 8: GABRIEL RUDDY & GARRETT SOLICITORS CLASS 3 H'CAP – 1200M

Trainer G. Heinrich was fined $100 for failing to declare R. McMahon as the rider of POLAR BLITZ by the prescribed time.

SKYTASTIC – Slow to begin.

THREE BEERS PLEASE – When asked to comment on the horse’s disappointing performance, D. Browne indicated that his mount began awkwardly and as a result he attempted to settle the horse further back than he would have liked. He added that the horse did not travel comfortably throughout the event and was under pressure after passing the 800m and proved disappointing in its finishing effort. Trainer L. Birchley could offer no explanation for today’s disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities, and a swab sample was taken. Stewards will follow up in the coming days with Mr Birchley if anything comes to light which may explain today’s performance before considering any action which may be taken.

PIGGY BANK – Slow to begin.

OVERRULE – Apprentice G. Goold reported that it had not been his intention to lead, however after his mount began well he felt he would be unable to steady and take up a trailing position so therefore, when caught wide in the early stages, he rode forward to position his mount outside the lead.
