GENERAL
As Apprentice J. Williams was unable to make the allocated weight in Race 3, he was replaced on BILLS ANGEL by G. Cartwright. Apprentice J. Williams was fined $200 pursuant to AR 190(3) for accepting a ride when overweight.
As rider R. Wiggins was unable to make the allocated weight in Race 8, he was replaced on CAISHEN by C. Graham. Rider R. Wiggins was reprimanded pursuant to AR 190(3) for accepting a ride when overweight. In assessing an appropriate penalty stewards considered rider R. Wiggins good recent record in regard to the rule.
Following the running of Race 1 a number of horses performed in an exhibition gallop. Following this exhibition gallop stewards noted that MOTORSPORTS (Trained by T. & C. McEvoy) had bled from both nostrils. The race day veterinary surgeon confirmed that the filly had bled bilaterally and as this was the first occasion would incur a three-month ban under AR79(4) and would also be required to gallop or trial over 1000m.
RACE 1:WORRELLS SUNSHINE COAST MAIDEN HANDICAP 1000 M
HEROIC VILLEN – Began awkwardly. Apprentice C. Sutherland reported at scale the gelding will appreciate a step up in distance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
OCEAN ALO - Raced wide throughout.
MAJOR HOT - Raced greenly under pressure in the home straight.
WILD LASS - Began awkwardly. Raced wide throughout. Apprentice K. Johnston reported that in her opinion the filly raced flat and advised connections that the horse may have come to the end of its preparation.
LUMINOUS GIRL - Slow to begin.
PIGGIETALES - Slow into stride.
RACE 2:BATHERSBY LEGAL MAIDEN HANDICAP 1200 M
The start of this race was significantly delayed when MUD ‘N’ BLOOD cast its off-hind plate on route to the barrier and had to be replated. MUD ‘N’ BLOOD subsequently underwent a veterinary examination and was cleared to start.
ARDIE THREE (NZ) – Slow to begin.
JUST FREE LOADING – Hampered at the start and lost ground. Noted to have lost the near fore plate in running.
MUD 'N' BLOOD - Began awkwardly. Raced wide throughout.
OLD FAITHFUL (NZ) – Slow to begin. Held up from leaving the 400m onwards and went to the line without being fully tested. When questioned regarding his riding in todays event, particularly from the 500m onwards and as to whether there was an opportunity to obtain clear running, rider B. Thompson stated prior to leaving the 400m he could not have shifted wider across the heels of JUST FREE LOADING as KINGS CHANCE was racing to his outside. After leaving the 400m he felt there would be opportunity to improve between WINNING FLAME and JUST FREE LOADING and improved to the inside of JUST FREE LOADING, however near the 300m JUST FREE LOADING shifted closer to the fence. Rider Thompson further added that leaving the 300m JUST FREE LOADING did shift away from the fence slightly and believed this run may open again however that did not occur and as a result was unable to obtain clear running. Stewards accepted the reasons provided.
HELL OF A HIGH - Near the 900m bumped and forced wider, then raced wide from this point onwards. Near the 200m inconvenienced when KING CHANCE shifted out.
FLYING AKEED - Hampered at the start and lost ground. Over raced onto heels passing the 900m and when being steadied shifted wider and bumped with HELL OF A HIGH and then raced wide from this point onwards
LOVE REBEL – Raced wide throughout.
WINNING FLAME - Began awkwardly and shifted out hampering JUST FREE LOADING, which in turn hampered FLYING AKEED.
KING CHANCE - Held up from leaving the 500m until passing the 200m, when shifted wider around heels to improve and in doing so inconvenienced HELL OF A HIGH.
RACE 3:SUPPORT SET QTIS THREE-YEARS-OLD MAIDEN HANDICAP 1600 M
HARD KNOX - Bumped at the start.
NARUKAMI - Began awkwardly and bumped with MANSORY. Raced wide for the majority of the event.
I SAY I SAY - Bumped at the start. Passing the 1400m over raced when being restrained from heels and then continued to over race until leaving the 1000m. Had some difficulty obtaining clear running rounding the home turn.
MANSORY (NZ) - Bumped at the start.
BILLS ANGEL – Began awkwardly and lost ground.
EVENING DELLE - Over raced for a short distance leaving the 1400m when being restrained to obtain cover.
GOLDEN EYES (NZ) – When questioned regarding his riding B. Thompson reported it had not been his intention to settle outside the lead as his pre-race view was he would settle midfield or slightly better, however when his mount began well and no other runners showed early speed he allowed his mount to travel comfortably and this resulted in GOLDEN EYES settling outside the lead. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a minor laceration to the near hind stifle, after being kicked by another runner in the enclosure on return to scale.
ZOU ZOU SHARGUSA - Began awkwardly and bumped HARD KNOX.
MEADE'S CAFÉ - Bumped with I SAY I SAY at the start.
RACE 4:MIX FM’S GIVE ME 5 CLASS 3 HANDICAP 1200 M
OUR SMOKESHOW (NZ) - Rider B. Thompson reported his mount laid out throughout the event.
CRACKENTHORPE (NZ) - Began extremely awkwardly and lost significant ground.
NEPRAVDA - Rider M. Rodd reported his mount made an abnormal respiratory noise on pulling up. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
RACE 5:CLUTCH LEGAL CLASS 1 PLATE 1000 M
JE REVE - Inconvenienced shortly after the start and lost ground. When held up for clear running passing the 500m improved onto the heels of HANNABANA became awkward and shifted out, momentarily inconveniencing KILONOVA. Rider A. Sewell was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
FORTYSECONDSTREET - Slow to begin.
ICED CHOCOLATE - Began awkwardly.
KILONOVA - Began awkwardly. Near the 900m when attempting to shift across the heels of ICED CHOCOLATE was significantly restrained from that horses heels and became awkward as a result. Over raced in the middle stages. Momentarily inconvenienced rounding the home turn.
SIZZLEIST - Began awkwardly.
RACE 6:INNOVATIVE PLANNING SOLUTIONS BM65 HANDICAP 1800 M
IONACELTIC - Raced wide throughout. Commenced to weaken passing the 500m. Apprentice B. Youngberry reported the gelding may have been tying up on return to the enclosure. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Trainer B. Healey advised stewards the gelding would now be spelled.
BOLD BLAZE – Near the 50m bumped on the hindquarters when OLE BAZZLE shifted out.
OLE BAZZLE (NZ) - Reared as the start was effected and lost significant ground. Laid out under pressure in the home straight and shifted out abruptly passing the 100m causing its rider to stop and straighten. Trainer G. Duncan was advised a warning would be placed on the gelding for its barrier manners.
TAP HIGH - Raced keenly in the early stages and approaching the 1400m became awkward in its action, raced with its head in the air and made contact with the running rail. Obliged to race in restricted room near the 1300m to the inside of BIG TICKET BOY which shifted in and continued to race ungenerously until leaving the 1100m.
SEERESS - Held up rounding the home turn and had difficulty obtaining clear running passing the 200m.
RACE 7:FTA ACCOUNTANTS QTIS THREE-YEARS-OLD BM65 HANDICAP 1400 M
ENFORCEABLE - Began awkwardly and shifted out bumping with AVE CANTARE.
SWING STATE - Declared a late scratching at 12:40pm, after being injured on route to the course. Trainers representative L. Freedman was advised SWING STATE would require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.
AVE CANTARE - Bumped at the start. After passing the 600m raced in restricted room and had to be steadied between PONTEVICO and ENFORCEABLE, which shifted out.
BON VADER - After obtaining cover near the 1200m commenced to over race and as a result shifted wider to avoid heels, forcing PONTEVICO wider and causing that horse to lose ground. Following this incident BON VADER improved to the lead passing the 800m. Trainer D. Vandyke was advised a warning would be placed on gelding for its racing manners.
PONTEVICO - Leaving the 1200m carried wider and forced to steady when BON VADER shifted out. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
MISHANI MOET – Raced wide throughout.
OPETAIA - Raced in restricted room shortly after the start and lost ground.
EKHIDNA - Passing the 800m steadied from heels when the pace of the race slackened.
QUEEN JEDDAH - Began awkwardly and bumped with OPTAIAI
RACE 8:LEVER LAW BM65 HANDICAP 1400 M
ROSSO LEVANTO was declared a late scratching at 4:30pm on stewards order when the mare became agitated, refused to leave the saddling enclosure and proceed to the start.
Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards declared that all bets placed on ROSSO LEVANTO be refunded with the following deductions to apply:
1st – OUT OF TURN 4c Win 3c Place
2nd – COOL MUSIC 4c Place
3rd – BLACK EYED BLONDE 5c Place
Trainer D. Vandyke was advised ROSSO LEVANTO would be required to trial to stewards satisfaction before racing again. Stewards ordered a sample be taken from ROSSO LEVANTO.
HAZEY HILL - Slow to begin.
READY AZZ EVA - Raced wide throughout.
SANCTUARY STORM - Slow to begin.
SLIPSAIN - Slow to begin. Held up rounding the home turn and was obliged to alter course passing the 200m to obtain clear running.
YES TO EXCESS - Began awkwardly and lost ground.
BADDA BOOM BABY – Raced wide throughout.
LAW MARSHAL - Began awkwardly and lost ground.
