Chairman of Stewards – A. Streckbein
Stewards – T. Preston, J. Childs, D. MacDonald and Z. Lines (cadet)

RACE 1:TRACKSIDE PHOTOGRAPHY BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP   1625 M

KIDS INTHE KITCHEN – Raced keen in the early stages.

BEST COFFEE- Trainer J. Moore was fined the sum of $200 under the provision of LR67(1) for the race day declaration of M. Savva. Change of tactics. The stable advised from the wide draw the intention was to settle further back. Settled toward the rear of the field. Raced keenly while being restrained in the early stages. Lost a near fore plate in running.

CONEY ISLAND BABY – Raced keenly in the lead.

MOONFLEET – Approaching the 1200m locked its off-hind stifle and as a result shifted out abruptly before being eased down near the 1000m. Immediately attended to by the veterinarian before being returned to the mounting yard. Apprentice C. Lowe reported that near the 1400m MOONFLEET began to feel uncomfortable behind and as she became aware that there may have been an issue, she eased her mount down. A post-race veterinary examination revealed intermitted locking of the off-hind stifle. Steward advised trainer H. Schwenke that MOONFLEET is now suspended from racing until producing a veterinary clearance prior to a 1000m gallop in front of Stewards before being able to compete for a further barrier certificate.

HARLEQUIN FIELD - Raced keenly in the early stages.

CHEERFUL CAT – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Passing the 1200m was bumped by BUMP’N’RUN, which when over racing shifted in.

PENDING LIST – Raced keenly in the early stages. Near the 1200m commenced to over race and as a result shifted out and raced in a three wide position without cover for the remainer of the event.

BUMP'N'RUN – Approaching the 1200m commenced to over race. Whilst over racing shifted in and bumped CHEERFUL CAT. Passing the 100m was hampered and carried out by FLYING ROTHE.

FLYING ROTHE – Slow into stride. Near the 1100m improved up onto the heels of KIDS INTHE KITCHEN and was eased. Near the 150m had to restrain when close to the heels of KIDS INTHE KITCHEN which had shifted in when not sufficiently clear (A. Keeley). Rider A. Keeley was reprimanded under the provision of AR 131(a) and advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances. When questioned about his riding from the 150m, in particular near the 100m when a gap presented between CONEY ISLAND and CHEERFUL CAT. Rider N. Tomizawa explained that after restraining and being hampered near the 150m, he felt it was best to shift out to gain clear running. After watching the available patrol footage N. Tomizawa conceded that when a run did appear at the 100m he may have been better suited riding forward between CONEY ISLAND and CHEERFUL CAT, rather than shifting wider. Stewards agreed with rider N. Tomizawa’s assessment and noted his comments.

RACE 2: PLATINUM GLASS & SECURITY BENCHMARK 70 HANDICAP   1625 M

CONNECTICUT - Began awkwardly. Laid in under pressure in the straight. Near the 200m, when laying in, shifted in.

KATDEEL - Began awkwardly. Laid out throughout. Rider B Wheeler reported that the gelding hung out throughout and was disappointing when placed under pressure.

MARENARO - Slow to begin. Held up passing the 600m, approaching the 550m, shifted out and was disappointed for a run between CONNECTICUT and BLUE CHIP GIRL and as a result was again held up until passing the 400m.

MADALSA – Tactics queried. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on the mare, rider L Tilly explained that he had been instructed to settle in a handy position, but after beginning only fairly, it was his opinion that he would have had to make too much use of his mount to be in a forward position. He added that he elected to restrain his mount to find cover, which as a result meant he settle further back than intended. He further explained that the mare traveled a little keenly through the event and when asked for an effort in the straight only found the line fairly and he was disappointed with the overall performance. Stewards noted his comments.

INDY ROSE WARRIOR (NZ) – Raced keenly in the early stages.

BLUE CHIP GIRL – Began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the early stages. Near the 150m, when weakening, was hampered by CONNECICUT, which had shifted in when laying in.

RACE 3: 1EQUINE - FOR THE EQUINE ATHLETE MAIDEN PLATE          1300 M

REVANTAS  - Shifted in under pressure near the 200m.

WILD BEAN  - Held up for clear running approaching the 300m until approaching the 200m. When questioned, rider L. Tilly explained that the gelding was reluctant to travel throughout the event and despite his efforts failed to quicken when placed under pressure near the 500m. He further added that when approaching the 300m his mount picked up the bit and started to travel and as a result he was then disappointed for running and held up until near the 200m. He stated that as his mount gained clear running to the inside of horses in the straight, it let down strongly and made ground quickly. He added that in his opinion the gelding would appreciate competing in events over further distances.

CAPTIVATE LEGEND – Began awkwardly, raced keenly in the early stages. Near the 300m commenced to weaken and eased down from the 200m. QOP drifter $2.50 out to $4.80. Performed below market expectations. When questioned, rider D. Peisley explained he was instructed to be forward on the mare and given the option to lead as it had at its previous start. D. Peisley explained that the mare began awkwardly and after heavy riding was still unable to get to the lead and so he elected to restrain his mount to get some cover near the 900m. He added that from this point the mare didn’t travel well and in his opinion may not have handled today’s soft track conditions. When asked about his riding from the entrance of the straight, rider D. Peisley explained that since his mount hadn’t travelled well, he placed the mare under pressure approaching the home turn, in an attempt to get CAPTIVATE LEGEND into the race. After responding only fairly to his riding on straightening near the 300m began to feel uncomfortable in her action and so he elected to ease his mount down from the 200m. When asked how the mare pulled up on return to scale, D. Peisley reported that the mare returned to scale in a normal manner and was at a loss to explain the overall performance from the mare but highlighted that she never traveled on the Soft 7 track conditions. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Trainer P. Robl reported that the mare had pulled up well on return to the stable and was also at a loss to explain the performance other than she may not have handled the track conditions. He advised Stewards that he would monitor the mare over the coming days and look to jump her out at the Gold Coast next Wednesday 10 June, before looking for better tracks. Due to the mare’s performance a warning was placed against CAPTIVATE LEGEND.

MARKHAM MISS – Began very awkwardly shifting in and bumping USUAL LIMITS which had began awkwardly.

SWEET ARMANI – Raced keenly in the early stages. Raced wide without cover for a majority of the event. Apprentice J. Newman was at a loss to explain the performance of the mare, which in her opinion was disappointing. A post race veterinary examination revealed a slower than normal recovery.

USUAL LIMITS – Began awkwardly and shifted out, bumped by MARKHAM MISS which had began awkwardly. Apprentice C. Sutherland reported that the mare travelled well into the straight and when placed under full pressure from the 300m only responded fairly. He added in his opinion the mare, which was racing for the first time under the Toowoomba lights, may have not appreciated those conditions and will derive benefit from further racing at this venue.

YES IS THE ANSWER – Near the 1100m was hampered by RUN TO YOU, which had shifted out when racing keenly.

RUN TO YOU – Slow into stride. Raced keenly in the early stages. Near the 1100m, when racing keenly, shifted out. Rider A. Keeley reported that after being slow to begin, he settled further back than intended. He added that once the filly reached the lead, she pricked her ears and raced greenly over the concluding stages.

MONAROMA – On return to scale rider M. Savva reported that the mare made a respiratory noise. A post race veterinary examination discovery harsh noises in the lungs. Trainer M. Morgan was advised a veterinary clearance with the results of an endoscopic scope would be required prior to the mare’s next engagement.

RACE 4: SHANNON SIGN COMPANY BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP   2020 M

WOWIT'S WILLYWONKA – Began awkwardly.

RUGBY - Began awkwardly, shifting in and bumping MELANCOLIE. Eased down over the final 300m.          Performed below market expectations. When questioned, apprentice C. Sutherland explained that he was instructed to settle in a handy position. He explained that after beginning only fairly the gelding failed to respond to his urgings and so he settled further back than intended. When questioned with regards to his riding in the middle stages of the event. C. Sutherland explained that after settling further back than intended he found a position trailing HARBERFIELD, which he felt had a good chance in the event. He further explained that approaching the 1200m, he felt with the tempo of the race, he may be better suited by encouraging his mount to shift wider and move closer to the speed. He expressed that when he did shift out that his mount showed little response and as a result maintained its position towards the rear of the field. When questioned about his riding at the 500m. C. Sutherland explained that when he placed his mount under full pressure it failed to respond, so he elected to ease his mount down over the final 300m. C. Sutherland reported that in his opinion the gelding showed a lack of interest throughout the event and never travelled. Trainer N. Keal reported that the gelding had pulled up well and the intention was to carry on with the current preparation. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. N. Keal was advised that RUGBY is now suspended to trial to satisfaction of Stewards due to its performance.

O'CALDINO  - Began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the early stages. When racing keenly near the 1200m was permitted to stride forward before settling in a handy position with cover near the 1000m, when shifting in to find cover bumped the hindquarters of PELLINOR.

HABERFIELD – Raced keenly in the early stages.

PELLINOR – Slow to begin. Raced wide without cover in the early stages. Allowed to stride forward and settle in the lead near the 1500m. Near the 1000m was bumped on the hindquarters by O’CALDINO.

GIDDY GAN'S JOY - Shortly after the start was restrained when in restricted room and shifted in to find cover. Raced keenly in the early stages. Laid in under pressure in the straight.

JORUM – Raced keenly in the early stages.

MELANCOLIE – Bumped at the start. Under pressure passing the 1000m, commenced to weaken from the 600m and was eased down over the final 400m. Rider G. Cartwright had no explanation for the performance. A post race veterinary examination revealed mild case of the thumps. Trainer M. Nolan was advised that the mare is now suspended to trial to the satisfaction of Stewards for MELANCOLIE’s poor performance. He advised Stewards that MELANCOLIE would now likely be spelled.

BOLERO – Late scratching at 7:44am Steward’s Order. Stewards accepted the explanation for the late scratching of BOLERO. As the scratching was executed within the interim scratching period, Stewards allowed the next emergency to be afforded a start.

Following the running of this race apprentice C. Sutherland stood himself down due to dehydration. He was advised to produce a medical clearance prior to his next engagements.

RACE 5: SHERRIN RENTALS QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP      1050 M

TINKERBELLA – Passing the 600m raced up onto the heels of MISHANI AZTEC and was eased.

AMERICAN CONQUEST   - Slow into stride.

MISHANI WITNESS – Passing the 200m shifted out and brushed TRUCK STOP HONEY.
EXOSTOVA  - When questioned, in particular to his riding through the middle stages, where after establishing the lead on the fence, shifted out. Rider D. Boche explained that it was the opinion of the trainer and his that the best ground was away from the inside running rail. He established this opinion due to the Soft 7 track conditions, where the inside lanes had deteriorated over the course of the evening and was now patchy. He added that after beginning well and encouraging his mount, he found the lead and then in order to comply with instructions, shifted away from the fence where the gelding travelled well but weakened when placed under pressure rounding the home turn and in the straight. Trainer J. Downes confirmed the nature of the instructions. Although Stewards accepted the explanation of D. Boche, nonetheless reminded him to ride in a manner that does not draw questions from the Stewards.

MISHANI AZTEC – Began awkwardly. Gave ground quickly from the 400m and was eased down in the straight. Rider M. Murphy reported that he was instructed to settle in a forward position on the filly and after beginning only fairly had to make some use of his mount to settling in a handy position. He further added that the filly being first up and working in the early stages was detrimental to its overall performance. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal in abnormalities. Trainer D. Stanbridge was advised that the filly is now suspended due to its poor performance.

RUSSIAN RIPPER – Raced keenly in the early stages. Near the 600m raced up onto the heels of TINKERELLA and as a result steadied out.

TRUCK STOP HONEY – Stood flat footed and as a result was slow to begin (2l). Lost contact with the bulk of the field, despite the efforts of its rider in the middle stages. Near the 200m was brushed and carried wider by MISHANI WITNESS, which had shifted out to improve.

RACE 6: BOTTLEMART CLASS 3 HANDICAP 1000 M

STAR RAPPER – Began awkwardly. Unplaced $1.40 favourite. When questioned, rider G. Geran explained that his instructions, in a small field, were to lead or settle outside the leader and after beginning awkwardly, he elected to race outside the leader. He added that the gelding raced a little keenly in the middle stages and when placed under pressure only responded fairly and was disappointing to the finish. He added that in his opinion the gelding may have not handled the quick back up from racing 23 May at Toowoomba and that the gelding would appreciate races over a greater distance than the 1000m of today’s event. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

CHARMED PASSAGE (NZ) – Laid out under pressure in the straight.

SPIRIT FOX – Began awkwardly.

RACE 7: BROWN FAMILY WINE GROUP MAIDEN PLATE          1050 M

The start of this event was delayed approximately 3 mins due to HE DA BOSS losing his near hind plate enroute to the barriers. An attempt was made to reapply the plate at the barriers but due to HE DA BOSS being cantankerous, it was unable to be reapplied. Application was made by the stable to race bare behind. Stewards acceded to this request. When the off hind was unable to be removed due to HE DA BOSS being fractious and kicking out the decision in the interest of safety, was made to allow the gelding to race without the near hind plate. Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was passed fit to race.

CALL SIGN – Passing the 300m, when weakening, was crowded and carried out by REIGN OF DAME bumping with KIRISHIMA.

COLINTON – Laid in under pressure in the straight. Leaving the 300m clipped the heels of KIRISHIMA becoming severely unbalanced. (G.Geran)

HE DA BOSS – Underwent a veterinary examination on arrival to the barriers after loosing a near hind plate and was passed fit to race.

OUTAGES – Raced keenly in the early stages.

THROW IT BACK – Began awkwardly.

KIRISHIMA – Raced wide without cover for the majority of the event. Leaving the 300m was bumped and hampered by CALL SIGN, which had been carried out.

AEROPOWER – Slow into stride and shortly after the start was restrained when racing in restricted room. Commenced to over race in the middle stages. Near the 600m, when over racing stepped out abruptly.

REIGN OF DAME – Raced keenly in the early stages. Near the 600m was awkwardly placed close to the heels of AEROPOWER, which when over racing shifted out (G Cartwright). G. Cartwright was advised to exercise more care. Had difficulty obtaining clear running approaching the 300m.

Rider G. Geran was found guilty of a charge of careless riding pursuant to AR131(a) in that leaving the 300m he shifted out when insufficiently clear of CALL SIGN (N. Yoshida), which was crowed and carried out onto KIRISHIMA (A. Keeley), bumping and carrying that gelding out into the line of COLINTON (K. Lenton) which clipped the heels of KIRISHMA and became severely unbalanced. G. Geran’s license to ride in races was suspended for a period of eighteen (18) days, commencing midnight 30th of May and concluding midnight 17th of June, eligible to ride from June 18th. In accessing penalty Stewards considered his plea, record, the significant interference and the QRIC Careless Riding Guidelines.
