GENERAL
 
Trainer K. Clark- Peoples was fined $100 under the provisions of AR65 for failing to provide the thoroughbred identification card for WANTED HILLBILLY.  
 
Trainer B. Gorman was reminded of his obligations to arrive on course by the prescribed time. Further, he was reprimanded under the provisions of AR165(3) for leaving the course prior to the prescribed time.
 
As apprentice O. Kendal was engaged to race at Eagle Farm and was unable to attend the meeting for her first engagement in Race 2. Stewards approved the replacement of C. Bellamy.

Race 1 - NEIL MANSELL BENCHMARK 62 HANDICAP          1220 M

STARBOARD – Raced wide in the early stages. Apprentice R. Thorburn reported the gelding, which was first up for a new stable, will derive benefit from further racing this preparation and a step up in distance.
 
FLYING BIRDS – Began awkwardly and shifted out making contact with IGOTCHA. Near the 400m, attempted to shift out and bumped with IGOTCHA. Lost both hind plates in running.
 
BUTT HEADS – Laid in under pressure and shifted in under riding over the concluding stages.
 
POCKET EIGHTS – Passing the 200m was checked and raced in restricted room to the inside of STARBOARD (R. Thorburn).
 
ROYAL BOMBADIER – Performed below market expectations. Apprentice K. Lenton was at a loss to explain the poor performance. A post-race veterinary failed to reveal any abnormalities. Co trainer C. Geran reported it was now his intention to send ROYAL BOMBADIER for a spell.
 
WANTED HILLBILLY – Had some difficulty securing entirely clear running at the entrance to the straight. Stewards questioned trainer K. Clark-Peoples regarding the improved performance of WANTED HILLBILLY. K. Clark-Peoples explained that as instructed at its first run for the stable, she wanted the gelding to be ridden in a handy position. When questioned in relation to the work completed and the five weeks between runs, trainer K. Clark- Peoples reported that the gelding took some time to settle into the new stable environment and although there was a gap between runs, WANTED HILLBILLY had missed no work and had not jumped out between runs. She added that she was pleased with his work leading into today’s event and anticipated a forward showing. She further added in her opinion she may continue to space the gelding’s runs as he raced well with a let up.
 
LUDIK – Slow into stride. Held up for clear running from approaching the 300m until passing the 100m. Over the concluding stages was steadied and then awkwardly placed close to the heels of WANTED HILLBILLY (M. Savva). Rider M. Savva was severely reprimanded and advised that she must stop and straighten sooner than she did on this occasion.
 
IGOTCHA – Slow into stride then hampered by FLYING BIRDS which had shifted out. Near the 400m was bumped by FLYING BIRDS, which was attempting to shift out.
 
EVERYWHERE – Raced keenly whilst being restrained in the early stages. Raced wide without cover for the majority of the event.
 
AZUKI – Slow to begin. Raced keenly in the early stages. Held up for clear running rounding the home turn until approaching the 100m. Wanted to lay in under pressure over the concluding stages. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted, rider T. Brooker explained that she was instructed to settle in a handy position with cover. She added that after being slow to begin she was unable to comply with instructions and as a result settled further back than intended. Trainer J. Dann confirmed the nature of the instructions which were to be handy and was surprised to see AZUKI as far back in the run as it settled.
 
Apprentice R. Thorburn pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR131(a). The particulars being that passing the 200m, whilst riding along, shifted in when insufficiently clear of POCKET EIGHTS which was checked and lost its rightful running. Apprentice R. Thorburn’s license to ride in races was suspended for a period of 10 days to commence Midnight 12 September and to conclude Midnight 22 September. Eligible to ride 23 September. In assessing penalty Stewards considered R. Thorburn’s guilty plea, record and the QRIC Careless riding template.

Race 2 - SR FRANCES FLINT CSB CLASS 2 HANDICAP          1015 M

RUMBLE TOWN – Blundered on jumping.
 
I'M LUCKY TWO – Began awkwardly and shifted out.
 
VESPER LYND – Began awkwardly then hampered between ILANA THE FIRST and I’M LUCKY TWO, which had begun awkwardly. Passing the 100m was eased when in restricted room between RUBMBLE TOWN and OCEAN JOY which had shifted out sightly. Near the 50m, when weakening, was eased when close to the heels of OCEAN JOY which had shifted out (N. Tomizawa). Rider N. Tomizawa was advised to exercise care.
 
SHAHAR – Passing the 400m was awkwardly placed close to the heels of BEAU’S GIRL, which had shifted out to improve (G. Cartwright). Rider G. Cartwright was advised to exercise greater care when shifting ground.  
 
OCEAN JOY – Slow to begin. Failed to muster speed in the early stages and lost contact with the bulk of the field despite the efforts of his rider.
 
BEAU'S GIRL – Raced keenly in the early stages.
 
ILANA THE FIRST – Raced wide without cover throughout.
 
CLAW MACHINE – Bounded at the start. Approaching the 100m laid in under pressure and then had to be steadied when close to the heels of SHELLY’S ACE.
 
SHELLY'S ACE – Began awkwardly.

Race 3 - TOOWOOMBA MAZDA BENCHMARK 70 HANDICAP          1640 M

THE LOUVRE – Laid in under pressure in the straight. Near the 150m shifted in and bumped BURLEIGH MAGIC which became unbalanced. Continued to race tight bumping BURLEIGH MAGIC on a number of occasions until passing the 50m.
 
SAMURAI WARRIOR (NZ) – Bounded at the start and as a result lost ground. Near the 100m was eased when briefly in restricted room.
 
FOUR ACE – Held up for clear running from the 300m until approaching the 200m.
 
DRIALLE – Rider T. Brooker reported that although it was her intention to lead, shortly after the start DRIALLE commenced to race keenly down the hill at the 1400m and she was unable to travel at the tempo she would have liked until approaching the 1000m. She added that the extra work in the early stages may have been detrimental to the overall performance.
 
DATA LEAK – Shortly after the start raced in restricted room to the inside of IL CUBO and was steadied.
 
BIG BOY GEORGE – Began awkwardly.
 
BURLEIGH MAGIC – Difficult to load. Trainer R. Lipp was advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding for being difficult to load. Near the 150m was bumped and became unbalanced by THE LOUVRE, which had shifted in. Continued to be bumped on a number of occasions by THE LOUVRE (A. Keeley). Rider A. Keeley was severely reprimanded under the provisions of AR131(a) for failing to make greater effort to prevent his mount from shifting in and bumping BURLEIGH MAGIC, whilst under full riding.
 
IL CUBO - Rider N. Tomizawa reported that he was disappointed in the performance of IL CUBO and was of the opinion that the gelding races best when he has more control of the tempo when racing at the 1600m.

Race 4 - BRETT WILMOTT ACCOUNTING BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP   2030 M

The start of this race was delayed approximately 2 minutes due to THE COPS being fractious in the barriers and undergoing a veterinary examination.
 
THE COPS – Fractious in the gates, rearing up, making contact with the crossbar padding and front of the gates. Underwent a veterinary examination and was passed fit to start. Trainer D. Bell was advised that a warning would be placed on THE COPS for being fractious. Began awkwardly. Apprentice K. Lenton had no explanation for the poor performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.
 
BROOKLYN DAISY – Raced keenly through the early and middle stages. Shifted out near the 1000m and was permitted to stride forward before shifting back to the rail near the 800m. Held up from approaching the 300m before being disappointed for a narrow run near the 200m and then shifting out into clear running approaching the 100m. When questioned about the tactics adopted, in particular to the reasons for shifting out and commencing a wide run in the back straight, apprentice C. Lowe explained that she was instructed to settle in a handy position and even with the tempo being genuine in the early stages her mount wanted to race keenly and got its head up on a number of occasions. She added that due to the instructions and her mounts manners, she elected to shift out from behind SHOWMAN approaching the 1000m and improve into the race. When questioned about her decision to shift back to the rail apprentice C. Lowe explained that after making the mid race move, an opportunity to shift to the fence became an option and to not cover unnecessary ground, she shifted to the rail. Once shown the available patrol footage C. Lowe agreed with the Stewards that after she had made the decision to shift out, she would have been better suited maintaining a position behind POWER OF SUCCESS, which was a favoured runner and this would of allowed her to obtain clear running sooner than she did on this occasion.
 
GOOD PHILLY – Began very awkwardly.
 
SHOWMAN (NZ) – Shifted in near the 800m. Stewards spoke to apprentice S. Callow advisedly in relation to her riding loosely, particularly in the back straight which invited BESIEGE to try and establish running between her and THE COPS.
 
BESIEGE – Eased near the 800m when in restricted room to the inside of SHOWMAN which had shifted in when not quite clear (S. Callow). Apprentice S. Callow was reprimanded under the provisions of AR131(a) and advised to exercise far greater care in similar circumstances. Over the concluding stages was brushed by BROKLYN DAISY, which had shifted out (C. Lowe). C. Lowe was advised to exercise care when shifting ground.
 
BOLERO – Began awkwardly. Briefly held up approaching the 200m when close to the heels of BROOKLYN DAISY, which shifted in after being disappointed for a narrow run.
 
ANOTHER DAZZLER – Began awkwardly and as a result was slow to begin. Inclined to lay-in throughout. Passing the 200m hung in and proved difficult for K. Yoshida to ride out in his usual manner. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the near fore. Trainer C. Zintilis was advised that a veterinary certificate would be required prior to it’s next start as well as a warning placed on the gelding for hanging in.
 
HELL OF A PRINCE – Began awkwardly.
 
Rider G. Cartwright pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR132(7)(a)(ii) in that she used her whip on 7 occasions prior to the 100m, which is 2 more than permitted, and 16 times in total. G. Cartwright was suspended for a period of 7 days commencing midnight 13 September and concluding midnight 20 September. Eligible to resume 21 September. In accessing penalty Stewards considered her guilty plea, record and the QRIC whip penalty guidelines.

Race 5 - TOOWOOMBA HOSPICE MAIDEN PLATE  1125 M

CONQUER DAT– When weakening passing the 100m, shifted in.
 
THE CARE TAKER - Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination due to being a 6 year old first starter and was cleared to start. Began awkwardly and shifted in. Inclined to lay in throughout. Rider K. Zechner reported that the gelding will derive benefit from further racing and was very green. Trainer P. Wallace was advised that a warning was placed on THE CARE TAKER due to its poor performance. Margin 19.74L.
 
HEAD OF THE RIVER – Bumped at the start. Rider B. Lerena reported that he was instructed to settle on pace, but due to the pressure he was receiving from CONQUER DAT, he had to make more use of his mount and ended up leading in the event. The stable confirmed the nature of the instructions, who also confirmed it was not the intention to lead. B. Lerena was satisfied with the performance but highlighted that in having to ride along in the early stages at a strong tempo, the mare was only fair over the concluding stages.
 
ROTHIRA – Slow to begin. Apprentice C. Bellamy reported that her mount became held up on a number of occasions from the 400m when on the heels of weakening runners. She added when she made use of her whip, her mount ducked in and was green.
 
GLAMOUR CONNECTION – Began awkwardly. Co trainer C. Geran was advised a warning would be placed on GLAMOUR CONNTECTION due to the Poor performance. Margin 24.87L.
 
CORI VERU  – Slow to begin. Raced keenly in the early stages. Near the 100m was eased when to the inside of CONQUER DAT, which when weakening shifted in. Delayed in returning to the mounting yard. Apprentice S. Callow reported that her mount took charge once passed the winning post and required the assistance of the clerk to return to the mounting yard.

On return to scale, prior to dismounting rider B. Lerena unclipped the chinstrap on his helmet. Stewards issued a severe reprimand under the provisions of LR.54 for failing to maintain a properly affixed helmet whilst mounted.

Race 6 - EMPIRE OF JAPAN THREE-YEAR-OLD AND FOUR-YEAR-OLD QTIS BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP          1015 M

PROPAGANDA – Began awkwardly.
 
BETTER SWEET – Began awkwardly and as a result was slow into stride.
 
BENT BRIDGE – Began awkwardly.
 
WAX ON WAX OFF– Raced wide without cover for a majority of the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed abrasions to the near-hind coronet band.
 
HOLD MY HAND – Steadied when in restricted room passing the 400m. Raced greenly and laid in under pressure in the home straight. Stewards inquired into the reasons K. Lenton steadied at the 400m and H. Richardson was eased. After reviewing the available film and gather evidence from K. Lenton (HOLD MY HAND), H. Richardson (LONESOME STAR) and T. Brooker (WAX ON WAX OFF) It was established that passing the 400m LONESOME STAR, which was racing on her wrong leg, shifted out marginally from the fence. At the same time PROPARGANDA shifted in marginally and WAX ON WAX OFF drifted in following that gelding. As a result of both minor shifts, HOLD MY HAND was steadied and momentarily unbalanced. As Stewards could not be satisfied that the interference was at the blame on any one rider, reminded all riders to exercise as much care as possible when shifting ground.
 
LONESOME STAR – Near the 400m was eased when in restricted room. Rider H. Richardson reported that after receiving some pressure near the 500m and again near the 400m he mount failed to respond to her riding and was fair to the finish. She added that the mare wanted to get onto the wrong lead leg on a number of occasions.


Race 7 - SUB-ZERO AIRCONDITIONING MAIDEN HANDICAP          1300 M
 
MISS ANNA MAE – $3.70 unplaced favourite. Became under pressure from the 500m, weakened from the 400m and eased down from the 150m. Rider G. Cartwright reported the mare did not feel entirely comfortable in its action over the concluding stages.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slower than normal recovery. Stewards will follow up with the stable.
 
KOBAN – Rider G. Geran reported he was satisfied with his mount’s performance, which was first up from a spell and lacked race condition. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.
 
STAFFO – Approaching the 200m disappointed for a run between KOBAN and GYSPSY JOY. After viewing the available footage apprentice K. Lenton agreed with Stewards that she may have been better suited searching for a run to the inside of KOBAN, rather than attempting a narrow run to that geldings outside, where she was ultimately disappointed for. 
 
DIAMOND OCEAN  – Slow to begin.
 
GYPSY JOY – Began awkwardly.
 
PRINCE SEVRES – Shortly after the start was hampered. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Near the 150m was eased when close to the heels of STAFFO.
 
MONEY ON MY MIND– Began awkwardly and shifted out.
